Travel Information

Arriving at UCAELI

The UCAELI office can arrange pick up at the airport by the Dreamweaver Limousine service. Please contact Arthur Galinat at UCAELI at: register-ucaeli@uconn.edu to request this service.

Another alternative is to ask at the Information Desk (the baggage claim area has a transportation or information desk) how to get to the Bradley Flyer. The Bradley Flyer is a bus service that runs from the airport to Hartford, Connecticut (a ten mile ride, approximate US $11) to the Bus Terminal. Buses depart approx. every hour until 8:45 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, and Wed., until 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday, and until 10:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Once in the Hartford bus terminal, walk to the Greyhound Bus Ticket Booth. you would then purchase a ticket from the Peter Pan/Bonanza Bus Lines either directly to the University of Connecticut Storrs (the bus will let you off in front of the UCONN Co-op bookstore) or you can ride the bus into the town of Willimantic. Please visit www.bonanzabus.com for bus schedules to UCONN and to Willimantic. From Willimantic take a taxi to campus. Thread City Cab Company's telephone number is 423-5700. The cost is approximately $10-$15. Click here for the Hartford UConn bus schedule

Housing

Both on and off campus housing options are available. All arrangements for on-campus housing are coordinated by our office.

On-Campus Housing

UCAELI - Intensive English Program

Undergraduate dormitories

Students have the option of living in a university undergraduate dormitory with an American or international student. Students who stay in undergraduate housing must purchase a meal plan. Undergraduate complexes do not have cooking facilities. Undergraduate dorms close during the Thanksgivng, Christmas and Spring breaks. Undergraduate housing is based on availability, and assigned on a first come first served basis.

Graduate dormitories

A single room in a graduate dormitory is an option for students who can show proof of having completed an undergraduate degree. The graduate dorms have fully equipped kitchens. For students who opt to purchase a meal plan, campus cafeterias are open seven days a week during the academic year and five days a week during the summer. There are also restaurants and cafes in the area.

Off-Campus Housing

Homestay

UCAELI will help to arrange a homestay with a local family for interested students. Please download the Homestay Application and submit it with your application if you are interested. For some sessions, there may only be a limited number of available homestays.

Housing Lists

Off-campus housing lists are available at UCONN DRL and:

Personal Items to Bring or Purchase

Students living in dormitories should expect that their room will have a bed, a closet, a chest of drawers, and a desk. The university does not provide sheets, blankets, pillows, towels, desk lights or hangers. You should try to either bring these items with you or buy them as soon as you arrive. Other items to bring: toiletries, an alarm clock, and snacks in case you do not have immediate access to a dining hall. It is highly recommended that you carry a small amount of U.S. currency for your arrival here at UConn in case you need to purchase some of the items listed above or for emergency purposes. You will be able to open an account at a local bank during your first few days of orientation.

Meal Plans

All students housed on campus in undergraduate residences must purchase a meal plan. Those staying in other housing complexes may also buy a meal plan if they so desire. See Dates & Costs for more information about the different meal plan options.

Health Insurance & Health Services

For protection against the high costs of health care in the United States, UCONN requires each student to have health insurance. Students are required to show proof of insurance coverage in the U.S. upon registering for classes. For students who do not have health insurance, UCAELI provides a group insurance plan at a reasonable cost. Information on this plan can be found at: http://www.shs.uconn.edu/insurance.html In addition to a health insurance plan, UCAELI students are eligible for medical services at the University's student health center. The center is open 24 hours a day throughout the week for routine medical care, illness and health counseling.
