The University of Connecticut American English Language Institute (UCAELI) is offering the following courses:

EECIS courses are part-time. Students who require an F-1 visa should consider the full-time Intensive English Program.

Academic Writing

This course is designed for international students from all disciplines who need to improve their academic writing skills. A key objective of the course is to help students write a clear, cohesive paper that meets academic standards. Topics will include: organizing, drafting, summarizing, paraphrasing, analyzing, persuading, MLA/APA citations, using transitions and self-editing. Grammar will be addressed as determined by individual student needs. Classes will be held on the Storrs campus.

Academic Writing Online - NEW

Convenient for busy students, this course is offered through WebCT Vista as an online course. See above Academic Writing description for course content.

Communicating on Campus

This course is ideal for international students who are preparing for teaching assistantships or simply need to improve speaking fluency, pronunciation, grammatical accuracy and listening comprehension skills. Course activities will include conversation practice, active listening exercises, discussions, practice peer tutoring, and presentations. Students will develop the ability to find and correct their own mistakes. Classes will be held on the Storrs campus.

Focus on Pronunciation

The goal of this course is to help the student to speak clear, precise English so the listener will easily understand the meaning of what is being said. Lessons will focus on both the individual sound level and the discourse level and will address vowel clarity, pitch patterns, stressed syllables, focus words, and intonation. Students will also use class time to work on individual problem areas.

Tuition for each course: $350
