Students must be able to speak, read, write, and understand basic words and short sentences in English when submitting an application. 

 

Please complete an online application form for UCAELI's Intensive English Program. The online application requires a $150 application fee payment with a credit card. If you did not pay this fee, please visit the payment store website complete your payment. Applications will be marked incomplete if you do not pay the fee. Conditional Students: The application fee is waived - do not pay the fee.

Step Two:

A staff member will begin processing your application. The following student credentials will be generated within 24-72 hours from when the application fee is received. Student credentials will be sent to the email address listed on the UCAELI application.

Please see below the student credentials that will be generated for you.

  • Student ID / Peoplesoft (7-digit number)
  • Net ID
  • UConn Student Email
  • Placement Exams

Important Note for students requesting the I-20 Form 'Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status' - Applicants will not be able to complete Step Three and Four without student credentials. You must wait to receive this information from a UCAELI staff member.

Step Three:

The enrollment deposit is $350 and it is required of all new and returning UCAELI students. This deposit guarantees your place in the upcoming  session. Applicants will not be issued an I-20 until the enrollment deposit is paid. Please visit the payment store to make a payment. 

Step Four:

Complete your I-20 request with International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS).                                              UConn NetID must be activated before making the I-20 request. Click here to activate NetID.

    Please do not email documents to UCAELI. Documents should be submitted through the ISSS online portal.

    In order to receive your I-20 you will need to prepare and submit the following documents:

    Copy of Passport You will need a copy of the full page that contains your biographic information. You will also need to submit the passports' of any dependents coming with you.

    If you are being funded by a personal sponsor they must complete Part 2: Personal Sponsor Declaration.

    Financial Support Documents

     Guidelines for Funding Support
    All funding documents must meet the following criteria:

    1. Issued within the past 3 months. 

    2. In English.
    3. Bank statements must identify the account holder and the currency.
    4. Funding must be liquid funds such as a savings/banking statement or certificate of deposit. No investment funds or salary confirmations.

    Step Five:

    The U.S government allows schools to issue electronic signatures on the I-20 form and provide digital copies of the form to incoming students. You can print the electronic copy of the I-20 form for use at your visa appointment and for entry to the United States (just be sure to sign your document after printing and that it has the electronic signature from a Designated School Official at UConn). 

    An international officer from ISSS will send a welcome email with pre-arrival information and further instructions on where to download the I-20 form.

    Please expect the I-20 form to be processed one week after paying the enrollment deposit.

    Step Six:

    After receiving the I-20 form, you may apply for your F-1 student visa through your nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

    Step Seven:

    Students will receive an official acceptance letter from UCAELI with program start date.

    Step Eight:

    Complete the (2) Placement Exams sent to you by UCAELI.

    Transfer Applications:

    To be eligible for the SEVIS transfer, you must apply and get acceptance from the University of Connecticut American English Language Institute (UCAELI).

    Please refer to Step One and complete a UCAELI online application and pay the application fee. Make sure to indicate on your application that you are transferring from another school. Please wait for your student credentials to be generated in Step Two and emailed before completing a SEVIS Transfer Release Form.

    U.S Citizen/Permanent Resident/Green Card Applicants:

    If you do not need a student visa to study at UCAELI, please follow all application steps EXCEPT - four, five, and six. 

    Part-Time Policy:

    Students may enroll on a part-time basis in UCAELI classes under the following conditions:

    1. They are not F-1 or J-1 visa holders.
    2. There is space available in the course they are requesting. Space will be determined after the placement of full-time students.

    The following rules apply to part-time registrations: 

    1. Students may only enroll in level appropriate courses.
    2. Students must be enrolled in a class by the 10th day of Fall and Spring semesters and by the 5th day of the Summer semester. Enrollments will not be permitted after these times.
    3. Part-time students must live off-campus.
